Silver Spring, MD — Edward Woodward’s classic spy series Callan, Set 2 debuts on home video from Acorn Media on January 26, 2010 (DVD 4-Vol., $59.99, www.AcornOnline.com). In a BAFTA-winning performance, Woodward stars as Callan, a brooding, conscience-stricken assassin for a shadowy British intelligence service so secret it doesn’t have a name. Marking esteemed British actor Edward Woodward’s first major television role, Callan aired from 1967-72 and earned a rabid following, spawning five novels and a feature film. Mr. Woodward passed away in November 2009 and appeared in more than 100 film and television projects. He is best known to U.S. audiences for his Golden Globe-winning and five-time Emmy®-nominated role in the 1980s series The Equalizer.
Akin to Smiley’s People and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, this highly praised British series brings a distinctly adult sensibility to the espionage thriller. In the long war of nerves between East and West, British agent David Callan has distinguished himself as a valuable asset: a competent killer who understands all the political and psychological angles. After a stint in Soviet prison, Callan wants out of the game. His coldly calculating superiors, Hunter (William Squire, Anne of the Thousand Days) and Bishop (Geoffrey Chater, Hotel du Lac), have other ideas. Callan soon learns that leaving his profession might be more dangerous than staying in – and that men like him have as much to fear from friends as from enemies.
In these final 13 episodes, this taut series elevates the spy thriller to emotionally charged drama.
Callan aired for four series as well as a theatrical film in 1974. Set 2 includes all 13 episodes from the fourth and final season. Released in July 2009, Set 1 included all nine episodes from the third series (the program’s first color episodes).
